From Punch Cards to Your Pocket: The Fascinating History of Operating Systems

Every time you swipe your phone, open a laptop, or ask a smart speaker a question, you're interacting with the invisible masterpiece of modern computing: the operating system. But this software didn't always exist. In fact, for the first few decades of computing, there was no "operating system" at all — just humans, wires, and endless patience.

Let's take a journey through the decades and explore how operating systems evolved from room-sized mainframe managers to the sleek, powerful platforms running billions of devices today.


Before Operating Systems: The Wild West (1940s–1950s)

In the earliest days of computing, machines like ENIAC (1945) had no software to manage them. Programmers physically rewired circuits and fed punch cards into machines one job at a time. If you wanted to run a program, you signed up for a time slot, loaded your cards, and prayed nothing crashed.

This era gave birth to batch processing — jobs were grouped together and executed sequentially. But switching between jobs still required human intervention, wasting precious (and extremely expensive) machine time.

The milestone: In 1956, General Motors and North American Aviation created GM-NAA I/O for the IBM 704 — widely considered the first true operating system. It automated job transitions and could run a new job as soon as the previous one finished.


The 1960s: Mainframes and the Birth of Big Ideas

The 1960s were the decade of the mainframe, and no story looms larger than IBM's System/360 and its operating system, OS/360. The project was so massive and troubled that its manager, Fred Brooks, wrote a legendary book about it — The Mythical Man-Month — which famously observed that "adding more people to a late software project makes it later."

This era also introduced concepts we still rely on today:

  • Time-sharing — multiple users interacting with one computer simultaneously
  • Virtual memory — making machines appear to have more memory than they physically had
  • Hierarchical file systems — the folders-within-folders structure you know today

The most ambitious project of all was Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service), developed by MIT, Bell Labs, and GE. It was visionary, powerful — and notoriously complicated. Its greatest legacy? The system created in rebellion against it.


The 1970s: UNIX Changes Everything

Frustrated with Multics' complexity, Bell Labs engineers Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie set out to build something simpler. The result, playfully named UNIX (a pun on "Multics"), would become one of the most influential pieces of software ever written.

Two decisions made UNIX legendary:

  1. It was rewritten in C (1973) — a high-level language — making it portable across different hardware instead of being locked to one machine.
  2. It was licensed cheaply to universities, where an entire generation of computer scientists grew up on it.

Meanwhile, as personal computers began to appear, Gary Kildall created CP/M, the dominant operating system for early microcomputers throughout the late 1970s.


The 1980s: Personal Computers and a Billion-Dollar Blunder

The 1980s brought computing to ordinary people — and produced one of the most famous stories in tech history.

When IBM needed an operating system for its new IBM PC in 1980, it reportedly approached Gary Kildall of Digital Research first. According to legend, Kildall missed the meeting (accounts vary — some say he was flying his plane), and IBM went to a small company called Microsoft instead.

Bill Gates didn't have an OS to sell — so he bought one. Microsoft purchased QDOS ("Quick and Dirty Operating System") from Seattle Computer Products for roughly $75,000, refined it, and licensed it to IBM as MS-DOS. Crucially, Microsoft retained the right to license DOS to other manufacturers. When PC clones flooded the market, Microsoft rode the wave to become the most valuable company in the world.

The decade's other revolution came from Xerox PARC, the research lab that invented the graphical user interface (GUI) — windows, icons, menus, and a mouse — and then famously failed to commercialize it. Steve Jobs visited in 1979, saw the future, and shipped it: the Macintosh (1984) brought the GUI to the masses. Microsoft followed with Windows 1.0 in 1985, initially dismissed by Jobs as a shameless copy — which, to be fair, it largely was.


The 1990s: Windows Dominates, Linux Rises from a Hobby

The Windows era

Microsoft's dominance peaked with Windows 3.1 (1992) and then Windows 95, whose launch was a global cultural event — complete with the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" in ads and people literally camping outside stores to buy software. The Start button, taskbar, and plug-and-play became household concepts.

A hobby that conquered the world

Meanwhile, in 1991, a 21-year-old Finnish student posted a now-legendary message to an internet newsgroup:

"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)..." — Linus Torvalds

That "hobby" was Linux. Combined with Richard Stallman's GNU project tools, Linux embodied the open-source philosophy: code that anyone could view, modify, and share. While it barely registered on desktops, it would quietly colonize servers, supercomputers, and eventually the entire internet.


The 2000s: Maturity, Crashes, and Comebacks

  • Windows XP (2001) became one of the most beloved and long-lived operating systems ever — so much so that people refused to stop using it for over a decade.
  • Apple, nearly bankrupt in 1997, staged the greatest comeback in business history. Steve Jobs returned, brought his NeXTSTEP technology with him, and rebuilt Apple's OS on UNIX foundations — resulting in Mac OS X (2001), whose DNA still powers every Mac today.
  • Linux became the invisible backbone of the internet, running the majority of web servers.
  • Mobile computing took its first real steps with Symbian, Palm OS, and Windows Mobile — clunky, stylus-driven systems that were about to be made obsolete.

The 2010s: The Smartphone Revolution

In January 2007, Steve Jobs stood on stage and introduced the iPhone. The multitouch iOS didn't just improve mobile operating systems — it obliterated the old paradigm entirely. No stylus. No menus. Just your fingers.

Google, having wisely purchased a startup called Android Inc. back in 2005, responded with Android in 2008. By making it free and open to manufacturers, Android exploded across countless devices and eventually captured the largest market share of any operating system in history.

Within a few years, more people were accessing the internet through phones than through PCs — a complete inversion of the computing world that Windows 95 had defined.


The 2020s and Beyond: Invisible, Everywhere, and Still Evolving

Today, the operating system is dissolving into everything around us:

  • Apple Silicon and ARM-based chips are reshaping what an OS can do with power efficiency
  • Containers and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes run on OS kernels but rethink what an "operating system" means
  • Cloud platforms abstract the OS away entirely for millions of developers
  • AI integration is becoming a native OS feature, from Copilot in Windows to on-device intelligence in mobile systems

And through it all, Linux runs the world — powering Android, most of the internet, every major cloud provider, Hollywood render farms, and even NASA's Mars helicopters.


Conclusion: The Invisible Giant

The history of operating systems is really the history of computing itself — a story of brilliant engineers, lucky accidents, missed meetings, hobby projects that conquered the world, and garage startups that became trillion-dollar empires.

From a punch card fed into a room-sized machine, to a GUI glimpsed at a research lab, to a supercomputer in your pocket — the operating system has always had one job: to make the impossible feel effortless.

And based on the pace of the last 80 years, the best chapters are still unwritten.
